Buying a Refurbished Club Car or EZGO: What to Check

Buying a Refurbished Club Car or EZGO: What to Check (and What We Rebuild)

When you buy a refurbished Club Car or EZGO, check five things: the frame, the battery age, the model year and drive system, the brakes and steering, and what was actually done in the refurb. Most of the expensive surprises owners talk about online, like a rusted frame, a “new” battery pack that isn’t new, or a problem model year, come from skipping those checks. Buying from a dealer who rebuilds carts and services them afterward takes most of that risk off your plate.

Why do so many people regret their first used golf cart?

Spend a few minutes in the r/golfcarts community on Reddit and you’ll see the same story again and again: someone buys a cart from a private seller, it runs fine on the test drive, and a few weeks later they find a weak battery pack, a corroded frame or a controller problem. Owners in those threads say they wish they had checked the frame, battery date codes and model history before handing over the cash.

Club Car and EZGO are popular for good reason. They’re durable, parts are easy to find, and almost every tech knows them. But “popular” also means there are a lot of tired carts out there with fresh paint.

What should I check on the frame?

Start underneath. Reddit techs and owners consistently point to the frame as the big-ticket item:

  • EZGO carts generally use steel frames. Steel can rust, especially around the battery area where acid and water collect. Look closely at the frame rails under the batteries and near the rear axle for flaking, holes or patched spots.
  • Club Car carts are known for aluminum frames. Aluminum doesn’t rust the way steel does, which is a big reason Club Car is a favorite here in humid, salty Northeast Florida. Still check for cracks, bent mounts or damage.

If a frame is badly rotted, the rest of the cart doesn’t matter much. Walk away or plan for a major repair.

How do I know how old the batteries really are?

“New batteries!” is one of the most common claims in used-cart listings, and Reddit users warn not to take it at face value. Lead-acid batteries carry a date code stamped on the case or terminal. Learn to read it, or ask a tech to read it for you.

Also check:

  • Corrosion on terminals and cables
  • Water level and condition on flooded batteries
  • Matching batteries. Mixed brands or ages in one pack is a red flag.
  • Real-world range if you can take a longer test drive

Check the charger too. A bad or mismatched charger can shorten the life of a good pack.

If the cart is otherwise solid but the batteries are tired, a lithium battery conversion is often a better long-term move than another set of lead-acid batteries.

Are there model years or drive systems to avoid?

Some Reddit techs warn buyers away from certain early versions of EZGO’s RXV, citing early electrical and controller issues on those first model years. Other platforms, like the EZGO TXT and the Club Car Precedent, get recommended often because they’re simple and well understood.

The broader takeaway: know exactly what model and year you’re looking at, and look up its common issues before you buy. A good dealer will tell you this straight.

What else belongs on a used cart inspection checklist?

Using Tigon’s checklist and owner advice as a guide, look at:

  • Brakes: The cart should stop straight and hold on a slope.
  • Steering: Excess play or clunking usually means worn parts.
  • Tires: Check tread, cracking and whether they match.
  • Suspension: Listen for squeaks and look for sagging leaf springs.
  • Motor and controller: Smooth acceleration with no stutter, and no burning smell.
  • Wiring: No melted insulation, loose connectors or messy add-on wiring.
  • Lights and accessories: Make sure everything works.
  • Serial number: It helps confirm the model year.

What’s the difference between “used” and “refurbished”?

A used cart is sold how it sits. A refurbished cart has been inspected, repaired and reconditioned before sale. At Mad Dog, the Club Car and EZGO carts we sell are refurbished only. We go through the cart, address what needs work, and get it ready for daily life in Northeast Florida.

Every cart is different, so ask us to walk you through exactly what was done on the one you’re considering, from batteries to brakes. We’re happy to show you.

Why buy refurbished from a local dealer instead of a private seller?

A private sale ends when you drive away. With a local dealer you get:

  • A cart that’s been inspected and reconditioned
  • Someone to call when you have a question or a problem
  • Golf cart repair and service that’s mostly mobile, with our Green Cove Springs shop as backup
  • Upgrade options like lithium conversions and lift kits

If you’d rather go new, we’re also an authorized dealer for TEKO, DACH, Aries EV and Voyager.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Club Car or EZGO better for Florida?

Both are solid. Club Car’s aluminum frame resists rust, which helps in our humid, salty climate. A well-refurbished EZGO with a sound steel frame is also a great cart. Condition matters more than the badge.

How can I tell how old golf cart batteries are?

Look for the date code stamped on each lead-acid battery’s case or terminal. If you can’t find or read it, ask a tech before you buy.

Are Mad Dog’s Club Car and EZGO carts new?

No. Every Club Car and EZGO we sell is refurbished. Our new-cart brands are TEKO, DACH, Aries EV and Voyager, and we’re an authorized dealer for each of those.

Can I add lithium to a refurbished cart?

Yes. Lithium conversions are one of our main services, and many refurbished Club Car and EZGO carts are good candidates. Call for a quote.
